Assets & Devices

Assets and devices are the foundation of location tracking in Pointeron. An asset is the thing you track, and a device is the hardware that reports its location.

Assets

An asset represents any physical object, vehicle, or animal you want to monitor. Assets can also represent people who have given their informed consent to share their location. Assets are the primary entities you interact with on the Live Map, in reports, and through the API.

Creating an asset

To create a new asset, go to Assets in the sidebar and click Create Asset. Fill in the following fields:

Asset types

Assets can represent different kinds of tracked entities:

• Vehicle -- Cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, forklifts
• Person -- Field workers, delivery drivers, team members
• Animal -- Pets, livestock, wildlife
• Object -- Packages, containers, equipment, tools

The asset type determines the default icon shown on the map and in lists.

Tracking configuration

Each asset has tracking settings that control how its location data is processed. Trip grouping settings appear under Trip Tracking on asset create/edit screens. Event-trigger and webhook-specific asset overrides appear under Event Thresholds. Alert rules, recipients, and delivery channels are configured separately from the Alerts page.

Custom attributes

You can attach custom key-value attributes to any asset for additional metadata. Each attribute has a name, a value, and a type:

• Text -- Free-form string (e.g., "License Plate: ABC-123")
• Number -- Numeric value (e.g., "Mileage: 45230")
• Date -- Date value (e.g., "Last Service: 2026-01-15")

Custom attributes are searchable and appear in the asset detail panel and API responses.

Editing and deleting assets

To edit an asset, click it in the asset list or on the Live Map and select Edit from the detail panel. All fields can be modified after creation.

To delete an asset, open its detail page and click Delete. This removes the asset and unassigns any connected device. Location history for the asset is retained for the duration specified by your data retention policy.

Bulk operations

Pointeron supports bulk operations for managing multiple assets at once:

• Bulk create -- Import assets from a CSV file
• Bulk update -- Change category, status, or tracking mode for multiple assets
• Bulk delete -- Remove multiple selected assets

Access bulk operations from the Actions dropdown at the top of the asset list.

Devices

Devices are the physical hardware or software components that report location data to Pointeron. Each device type has different reporting characteristics and setup requirements.

Device types

Pointeron supports several categories of devices, including:

Mobile Tracker

An iPhone or Android phone running Pointeron Mobile. The phone can use motion-aware background tracking, denser high-fidelity tracking, or a single foreground location on demand.

• Sync interval: Mode dependent
• Battery: Uses the phone battery; depends on tracking mode and GPS conditions
• Setup: Open More > Tracking Settings in Pointeron Mobile
• Best for: Consensual phone tracking, field teams, journeys, and occasional check-ins

Find My Items (AirTags)

Apple AirTags and other Find My network accessories. Location is synced via Apple's Find My service approximately every 15 minutes.

• Sync interval: ~15 minutes
• Battery: CR2032 coin cell (lasts ~1 year)
• Setup: Connect your Apple ID in the Devices page
• Best for: Luggage, keys, pets, personal items

Find My Devices

iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. Location is synced via Apple's Find My service approximately every 15 minutes.

• Sync interval: ~15 minutes
• Battery: Varies by device
• Setup: Connect your Apple ID in the Devices page
• Best for: Consensual location sharing, fleet tablets, team coordination

GPS Trackers

Dedicated hardware trackers from manufacturers like Teltonika, GT06, and H02. These connect directly to the Pointeron tracking server over TCP and report at high frequency.

• Sync interval: ~3 seconds+
• Battery: Varies (some are hardwired to vehicle power)
• Setup: Configure the tracker's server address to point to Pointeron
• Best for: Vehicle fleets, high-frequency tracking, commercial operations

Beacon Trackers

AirTags and Beacons sold and shipped to customers, managed by Pointeron. These devices report via the Pointeron API.

• Sync interval: ~10 seconds (configurable)
• Battery: Varies by device
• Setup: Use an API key to POST location data to the ingest endpoint
• Best for: Custom integrations, mobile apps, IoT deployments

Assigning devices to assets

A device can be assigned to exactly one asset at a time. To assign a device:

1. Go to Assets and select the asset
2. In the asset detail page, click Assign Device
3. Select the device from the list of available (unassigned) devices
4. Confirm the assignment

You can also assign a device from the device list page by clicking the device and selecting Assign to Asset.

When you reassign a device from one asset to another, it immediately stops reporting to the previous asset and begins reporting to the new one.

Device status and presence

Pointeron separates device state into presence, lifecycle, tracking, sync health, and configuration sync. Presence answers whether Pointeron recently heard from the device or source, while tracking answers whether Pointeron should process new locations.

Tracking is effective only when the device tracking toggle, per-device billing or activation status, and lifecycle state all allow location processing. An active organization subscription does not automatically mean every device has already been activated for tracking.

Battery tracking

Pointeron tracks battery levels for all devices that report battery data. Battery information is displayed:

• On the Live Map asset markers (color-coded indicator)
• In the asset panel sidebar
• In the asset detail panel
• In API responses

Battery color indicators:

Configure the battery_threshold on each asset to set the level at which a low battery alert is triggered. The default threshold is 20%.
