Creating Geofences

Geofences are virtual boundaries you draw on the map. When an asset enters, exits, or dwells inside a geofence, Pointeron triggers alerts and sends notifications to keep you informed.

Geofence types

Pointeron supports four geofence shapes, each suited to different use cases:

1. Navigate to Geofences in the sidebar
2. Click Create Geofence
3. Choose a geofence type (circle, polygon, rectangle, or corridor)
4. Draw the boundary on the map or enter coordinates manually
5. Fill in properties (name, description, color)
6. Configure alert rules and schedule
7. Click Save

The geofence appears on the Live Map immediately after saving. Any asset already inside the boundary will trigger an entry alert if entry rules are configured.

Circle geofences

Circle geofences are the simplest type. Define a center point and a radius to create a circular boundary.

• Center point: Click on the map to place the center, or enter latitude and longitude manually
• Radius: Set the radius in meters. Minimum radius is 50 meters, maximum is 50,000 meters (50 km)
• Visual feedback: The circle previews on the map as you adjust the radius

Polygon geofences

Polygon geofences let you draw a custom shape by placing vertices on the map.

• Click on the map to add each vertex. A minimum of 3 points is required
• Close the polygon by clicking the first vertex again or clicking Close Shape
• Vertices can be dragged to adjust the boundary after placement
• Complex shapes with concave boundaries are supported

Rectangle geofences

Rectangle geofences are a quick way to define a rectangular area.

• Click on the map to place the first corner (e.g., top-left)
• Click again to place the opposite corner (e.g., bottom-right)
• The rectangle fills automatically between the two diagonal points
• Drag either corner to resize after placement

Rectangles are aligned to the map grid (north-south and east-west edges). If you need a rotated rectangle, use a polygon with four vertices instead.

Corridor / RouteGuard (Enterprise)

Corridor geofences define a route path with a configurable width, ideal for monitoring whether vehicles stay on designated routes.

Defining a corridor

• Route path: Define waypoints along the route by clicking the map or using the route planner
• Corridor width: Set the width in meters on each side of the path (e.g., 100 meters creates a 200-meter-wide corridor)
• Checkpoints: Add named checkpoints along the route for arrival, sequence, and timing monitoring

Creation modes

Direction settings

• Bidirectional: Alerts trigger regardless of travel direction (default)
• One-way: Alerts trigger only when traveling in the defined direction. Wrong-way travel generates a direction violation alert

Geofence properties

Every geofence has the following configurable properties:

Buffer zones

A buffer zone adds a warning area around the geofence boundary. When an asset enters the buffer zone but has not yet crossed the actual boundary, you can trigger a separate "approaching" notification. Buffer zones are displayed as a semi-transparent outline around the geofence on the map.

Schedule

Control when a geofence is active:

Custom schedules support multiple time windows per day. For example, you can set a geofence to be active Monday through Friday from 07:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 18:00, excluding the lunch break.

When a geofence is outside its scheduled hours, no alerts fire -- even if assets cross the boundary.

Display options

Geofences are visible on the Live Map by default. Use the Show on map toggle to hide a geofence without deactivating it. Hidden geofences still trigger alerts when active.

You can also control geofence visibility from the Live Map layer controls. Toggle the Geofences layer to show or hide all geofences at once, or filter by category.
