Apple AirTags - Pointeron Docs

Track Apple AirTags and Find My items through Pointeron by connecting your iCloud account. Pointeron syncs AirTag locations approximately every 15 minutes, giving you a continuous location history on the Live Map.

Overview

Apple AirTags use the Find My network -- a crowdsourced mesh of hundreds of millions of Apple devices -- to report their location. Pointeron connects to your iCloud account to retrieve these location updates and display them alongside your other tracked assets.

Key characteristics:

Sync interval: Approximately every 15 minutes (determined by Apple)
Location accuracy: Depends on proximity to nearby Apple devices. Typically 5--50 meters in urban areas
Battery life: AirTag battery lasts approximately one year (user-replaceable CR2032)
No SIM or data plan required: AirTags leverage nearby iPhones and iPads to relay their location

Prerequisites

Before adding an AirTag to Pointeron, ensure:

You have an active Apple ID with Find My enabled
The AirTag is registered to your Apple ID (paired through the Find My app on your iPhone)
The AirTag has been detected by the Find My network at least once (it must have a known location in Find My)

Setup methods

Pointeron offers three methods to connect your iCloud account and import AirTag data:

Remote extraction

Go to Devices > Add Device > Find My Item
Select Remote extraction
Enter your Apple ID email and password
If two-factor authentication is enabled, approve the sign-in on your trusted Apple device and enter the 6-digit code
Pointeron connects to iCloud and lists your Find My items
Select the AirTag(s) you want to track
Click Add selected devices

Upload extraction

On your Mac, open Keychain Access and export the iCloud Find My token as a .plist file
In Pointeron, go to Devices > Add Device > Find My Item
Select Upload extraction
Upload the exported .plist file
Select the AirTag(s) to track

Local extraction

Download the Pointeron desktop companion app from Settings > Downloads
Run the companion app on your Mac
The app extracts your iCloud Find My credentials locally and generates a secure token
Enter the token in Pointeron to link your account
Select the AirTag(s) to track

Credential security

Your iCloud credentials are encrypted in transit and at rest using AES-256 encryption. Pointeron never shares your Apple ID credentials with third parties. You can revoke access at any time from the device settings page.

Adding an AirTag

Once your iCloud account is connected, adding an AirTag takes seconds:

Go to Devices > Add Device > Find My Item
Choose your extraction method (or select an already-connected iCloud account)
Authenticate with your Apple ID if prompted
Your Find My items appear in a list showing name, type, and last known location
Check the AirTag(s) you want to track
Click Add selected devices

Each AirTag appears as a device in your Devices list. Assign it to an asset to see it on the Live Map.

Sync behavior

Pointeron polls your iCloud account approximately every 15 minutes for updated AirTag locations.

First sync: The AirTag's current Find My location is imported immediately after setup
Ongoing syncs: New location data is fetched every 15 minutes and added to the asset's location history
No real-time tracking: Due to Apple's architecture, AirTag locations are not available in real time. For real-time tracking, use a GPS tracker
Offline AirTags: If the AirTag has not been detected by the Find My network recently, its last known location is shown with a timestamp indicating when it was last seen

Battery monitoring

AirTag battery level is reported by iCloud and displayed on the device detail page and asset panel.

Battery level is shown as a percentage indicator
Set a battery threshold to receive alerts when the level drops below a configurable value (e.g., 10%)
Battery alerts are delivered through your configured notification channels (email, push, SMS)
AirTag batteries (CR2032) are user-replaceable and typically last about one year

Limitations

AirTag tracking through iCloud has inherent limitations to be aware of:

Sync interval	Approximately 15 minutes. This is an Apple limitation and cannot be reduced
Location accuracy	Depends on nearby Apple devices. Rural or low-density areas may have less accurate or less frequent updates
Not real-time	AirTags are designed for item finding, not continuous tracking. Use GPS trackers for real-time needs
Apple account required	The AirTag must be registered to an Apple ID that Pointeron can access
Two-factor authentication	If 2FA is enabled on your Apple ID, you must approve the initial sign-in on a trusted device

Tip

AirTags work best for tracking items that do not need real-time monitoring -- luggage, tools, equipment, pets, and personal belongings. For vehicles or assets that need second-by-second tracking, pair a GPS tracker instead.

Pricing

AirTag tracking is billed at EUR 5 per month per Find My Item. Each AirTag counts as one Find My Item on your invoice. The charge applies as long as the device is active in your organization. Deactivate or remove a device to stop billing.
