Device Setup

Find My Devices

Track Apple devices -- iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches -- through Pointeron by connecting your iCloud account. Pointeron syncs device locations approximately every 15 minutes using the Find My network.

Overview

Apple devices with Find My enabled report their location to iCloud automatically. Pointeron connects to your iCloud account to retrieve these locations and display them on the Live Map alongside your other tracked assets.

Key characteristics:

  • Sync interval: Approximately every 15 minutes (determined by Apple)
  • Location accuracy: High -- devices use GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, and cell tower triangulation
  • No additional hardware: Track devices your team already carries
  • Multiple devices per account: One Apple ID can have multiple devices, each tracked independently

Prerequisites

Before adding an iCloud device to Pointeron:

  • The device must be signed in to an active Apple ID with Find My enabled
  • Find My must be set to Share My Location (enabled by default on most devices)
  • The device must be powered on and connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or cellular)

Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is required for iCloud accounts. When you connect your Apple ID to Pointeron, you will need to approve the sign-in on a trusted Apple device and enter the 6-digit verification code.

Setup

  1. Go to Devices > Add Device > Find My Device
  2. Enter your Apple ID email and password
  3. Approve the two-factor authentication prompt on your trusted Apple device
  4. Enter the 6-digit verification code in Pointeron
  5. Pointeron connects to iCloud and displays a list of all devices registered to the Apple ID
  6. Select the devices you want to track
  7. Click Add selected devices

Each selected device appears in your Devices list. Assign each device to an asset to see it on the Live Map.

Tip

You can connect multiple Apple IDs to a single Pointeron organization. This is useful when tracking devices belonging to different team members.

Supported devices

Pointeron supports tracking any Apple device that has Find My enabled:

Device typeLocation sourcesTypical accuracy
iPhoneGPS, Wi-Fi, cell towers5--15 meters
iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular)GPS, Wi-Fi, cell towers5--15 meters
iPad (Wi-Fi only)Wi-Fi positioning15--65 meters
Mac (laptop)Wi-Fi positioning15--65 meters
Apple Watch (GPS model)GPS, Wi-Fi, paired iPhone5--30 meters
Apple Watch (non-GPS)Wi-Fi, paired iPhone15--65 meters

Location accuracy

iCloud devices use multiple positioning technologies to determine their location:

  • GPS: Available on iPhones, cellular iPads, and GPS Apple Watches. Provides the highest accuracy (5--15 meters)
  • Wi-Fi positioning: Triangulates location using nearby Wi-Fi networks. Accuracy varies (15--65 meters) depending on the density of known Wi-Fi access points
  • Cell tower triangulation: Uses nearby cell towers as a fallback. Less accurate (100--300 meters) but works in areas without Wi-Fi

The device automatically selects the best available positioning method. Indoor locations typically rely on Wi-Fi, while outdoor locations use GPS when available.

Lost mode

If a device is marked as Lost in Apple's Find My app, Pointeron reflects this status:

  • The device status shows Lost on the device detail page and asset panel
  • A visual indicator appears on the Live Map marker
  • Lost mode does not affect Pointeron's ability to track the device -- location updates continue as normal

Lost mode limitations

Pointeron displays Lost status as reported by iCloud but cannot enable or disable Lost mode. Use the Apple Find My app or iCloud.com to manage Lost mode.

Multiple devices

One Apple ID can have many devices registered. When you connect an Apple ID, Pointeron lists all devices and lets you select which ones to track.

  • Each tracked device is a separate entry in your Devices list
  • Each tracked device counts separately toward your plan's asset limit
  • Each tracked device is billed independently
  • You can add or remove devices from an already-connected Apple ID at any time from Devices > Manage iCloud accounts

Pricing

iCloud device tracking is billed at EUR 5 per month per Find My Device. Each device you select for tracking counts as one Find My Device on your invoice. Deactivate or remove a device from Pointeron to stop billing for it.

Privacy

Pointeron accesses only location data from your iCloud account.

  • No personal data: Messages, photos, contacts, calendars, and other personal data are never accessed
  • Location only: Pointeron reads device name, type, location coordinates, battery level, and Find My status
  • Encryption: All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS and stored with AES-256 encryption at rest
  • Revoke access: Disconnect your Apple ID from Pointeron at any time from the device settings page. You can also change your Apple ID password to invalidate the connection immediately

Data handling

Pointeron is committed to protecting your privacy. Your iCloud credentials are encrypted and stored securely. We never share your Apple ID or device data with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
